The first volume, as planned by Robertson, "with a lengthened preface, and its documentary illustrations" was never published. After Robertson's death, George Grub wrote a preface for the "Collections" and "Illustrations," containing a biographical notice of Robertson, which, with an Index of persons and Index of places, for both the "Collections" and "Illustrations", was published, 1869, as "The first volume" of the Illustrations
